2016 Home Design Trends to Watch For

Winter has fully arrived – and now is the perfect time to settle down to the work of the year ahead.

Preparing for spring and summer home improvement projects while the weather outside is frightful actually makes a lot of sense.

You have plenty of indoor time to decide what must change, and you can begin budgeting and designing for the most desirable projects.

Look for Larger Kitchens

BLOG - Jan 2016 - Midwest - luxury kitchen

A perennial remodeling target, kitchens for 2016 will be larger and more open. Look for clean, easily maintained appearances in everything – from kitchen cabinets to appliances.

  • Cabinets—Clean lines, understated elegance and sophisticated hardware will be popular in 2016. The simplicity of Shaker-inspired cabinetry will be balanced with white, grey and neutral colors.
  • High Tech—Expect to see charging stations, docking spots and undercounter tablet holders to free up counter space while still letting users customize their media experience
  • Layout—Oversized islands, window seats in bay windows, and larger pantries will trend up for 2016. You may consider breaking through an exterior wall to add space for a breakfast area, picture window or garden window

An Enhanced Master Suite

BLOG - Jan 2016 - Midwest - luxury bathroom

Expanding the space that is your oasis and retreat makes a lot of sense and can significantly increase your return on investment. A master bedroom’s master bath can be opened up and expanded to include:

  • Whirlpool tub
  • Bidet
  • Twin sinks
  • Walk-in shower
  • Surround-sound speakers
  • Makeup table and mirror

While transforming the bath, do not skimp on the master bedroom itself. Hot trends for 2016 include dual walk-in closets, plenty of off-white in paint and decor, and a home office nook off the master bedroom. Adding additional power for all the electronics and gadgets we have come to depend on is a job for a licensed electrician, but well worth the money.

Outdoor Oasis

BLOG - Jan 2016 - Midwest - outdoor oasis

Always popular in the warm and sunny south, living part of our time outdoors while staying home can enrich and nourish our lives.

This New Year will see a trend toward inviting traffic flow from indoors out with larger sliding glass doors twinned and tripled to open up an entire wall, outdoor kitchens, and larger patio space.
