5 Must-Haves for Home Emergencies

Blog-damaged-roof-jan2016

Weather related emergencies do happen, even in Eden Prairie. Unfortunately, the weather can sometimes be hard to predict, which often leads to anything from mild to serious property damage. More often than not, this requires emergency repair. For example, any damage done to the roof of your Eden Prairie home will require emergency repair of some sort. Leaving any damage alone could cause it to worsen and potentially lead to other issues, such as leaks and mold, to name a few.

Although you can’t always prevent these things from happening, you can certainly prepare for them. The following are a few things Midwest Roofing, Siding & Windows suggests you have around your Eden Prairie home in order to prepare for potential home emergencies:

1. Have an Escape Route

If your home is no longer safe to be in, whether because of storm damage, flooding, or some other emergency, then make sure that you have an escape route planned out with your family. Teach your family where they should exit the house and where to meet up outside.

2. Carbon Monoxide and Smoke Alarms

You should have carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms on every floor of your home. Make sure to test them on a regular basis and to double check their battery life.

3. Fire Extinguisher

Always have a fire extinguisher on hand near your kitchen area. The kitchen is the one space that is most vulnerable to fire, which means having a fire extinguisher nearby is an absolute must.

4. Emergency Kit

Have an emergency kit put together in a place where it is easily accessible. Your emergency kit should contain a first aid kit, a battery-operated flashlight and a radio in case of a power outage, plus extra batteries for both.

5. Phone Number List

Make sure to have a list of phone numbers handy for potential emergency repair services. Ideas for emergency numbers to have at hand are: a plumber, a contractor, a roofer, an electrician, etc. Plus, family and friend’s names are good to have at hand, as well.

The following are a few ways to deal with emergencies:

Fires

If a fire breaks out in the kitchen, turn off or unplug the appliance that caused it. Don’t use water on a grease fire as this can cause grease to splatter.

Basement Flooding

Turn off the electricity, if possible, and stay out of the water.
