Beauty Is as Beauty Does…For Windows, that Is

replacement windows for your homeWindows are more than just a structural element of your home. The right types of windows add beauty, elegance, and sophistication to the exterior and interior of your home. From the inside, windows are the artistic frames around your view of the outside. The outside appearance of your windows affects curb appeal and compliments the style of your house.

In our article “Types of Windows: Which is Best for Your Home?” we covered the basic styles of windows that are available to most homeowners.  In this article, we’d like to highlight the top 3 windows in that group, and offer a bit more information on their development.  We think that, among the most beautiful window styles, are: bay windows, multi-paned windows, and picture windows. When installed properly, these windows add an extra design element to any space.

Bay windows

Bay windows have the ability to transform the entire look and feel of a room. When their shape is more rounded these windows are bow windows, but they’ve been adapted to fit even homes with a more modern style. Bay windows originated in medieval times when the extended space functioned as an altar or chapel. That extra space nowadays serves as a window seat, kitchen nook, work area, or spot to grow plants in the ample sunlight.

Multi-paned windows

Multi-paned windows, also called multi-light or divided light windows, originated in the Industrial age when small panes of glass were arranged in grids separated by muntins to create larger types of windows and doors. They’re available in a variety of decorative patterns that reflect a home’s architectural style, add visual interest, and impart a sense of elegance. Multi-paned windows are also used in a home’s interior such as over an arched doorway to increase light and give the space an open feel.

Picture windows

Picture windows are traditionally large, fixed windows that provide an uninterrupted view of the outside. The designs of these types of windows allow in ample light and are the perfect way to draw attention to a spectacular view. From the outside looking in, picture windows are an ideal location to exhibit favorite interior design details such as lamps or vases. Their unobstructed view, superior insulation, and durability add to their appeal, but they’re inability to be opened is seen as a drawback by some. To get ventilation and the clear view of a picture window, flank it with two smaller, crank out windows that open and allow fresh air to flow.
