Choose Insulated Doors for Added Energy-Efficiency

One of the most often overlooked energy savers is insulated doors. Even if your Eden Prairie home is well insulated, you could still be losing a great deal of air through a door that does not fit properly or provide adequate protection. Insulated doors are a great choice to consider when you need to replace your doors and increase energy savings in your home.

Characteristics of Insulated Doors

Insulated doors are typically made from fiberglass or steel, and have an inside core filled with polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam has insulating properties that provides the protection which prevents the temperature of outside air from entering your home and causing your heating and cooling system to work harder. Additionally, since they contain a magnetic seal that is similar to that found on refrigerators, insulated doors provide an exceptionally tight fit. Very little air escapes from around them.

Some other advantages of insulated doors as a home improvement project are:

  • Manufactured in a Variety of Styles and Colors
  • Resistant to Shrinking and Warping When Exposed to the Elements
  • Durable and Long Lasting
  • Resistant to Scratches and Dents
  • Made to Filter out Harmful UV Rays
  • Easy to Secure

Weatherstripping

Your Eden Prairie home’s doors will wear out over time. Repeated opening and closing as well as exposure to the elements can cause them to be less energy-efficient after years of use. If it has been a while since you last replaced your doors, inspect them to see they should be completely replaced or if another option would help with their energy-efficiency.

Perhaps your doors provide adequate insulation, yet have minor gaps around the edging that allow air to pass. If so, weatherstripping might be the only home improvement needed to improve their energy-efficiency. Weatherstripping is something that can be done rather inexpensively, and is an option for windows as well as doors.

There are different types of compression weatherstripping that can be used, all of which are installed around the door frame or window: Felt, V-Strip or Tension Seal, Foam, and Tubular Rubber, Vinyl, or Silicone.

Before installing weatherstripping:

  • Use some sort of scraper to remove any debris or paint
  • Press weatherstripping into the space, trimming at the end as needed
  • Check for proper fit by opening and closing the door to check for gaps
