How do you ensure that you choose the right contractor? Many homeowners have a hard time determining who to trust with their home remodeling projects – and their pocketbooks. Here are five questions to ask yourself to help make the right choice:
1. How long have you been in business?
Finding a company that has been established for a long period of time is promising. Look for a company who has local roots with a proven record of longevity. Many construction companies do not survive the first 5 years – with disastrous effects for the homeowners who try to take advantage of the warranty they were offered – only to find that it disappeared along with the company.
2. Do you have a local address?
Storm chasing roof contractors are notorious for fraudulent charges – and low quality workmanship. To avoid the hassle of a roofing scam, make sure the contractor you work with has a local address. Verify their status with online sites such as Angie’s list and the BBB. Ask for local references of past work.
3. What kind of warranties do you offer for installation and manufacturing?
When investing in updating your home, look for quality warranties that cover workmanship. Many contractors who are serious about their work take the time to become certified by various manufacturers and are able to offer the best warranties in the industry.
4. What type of accreditations do you have?
As the construction industry progresses, it is important to look for a contractor who stays up to date and maintains their certifications. This includes their rating with the Better Business Bureau, websites like Angie’s List and through manufacturer programs.
5. Do you offer the products I am looking for?
Do some research to find out what look you want for your home – and who can offer those products. There are many different products in the market, so if you have found a great contractor, ask for his opinion on the materials you have chosen. A good contractor will base their recommendations off of experience, knowledge within the industry, and your personal needs and wants.
6. Are you licensed and insured?
The state of Minnesota requires that roofing contractor carries current licensing (details here), as well as documentation of insurance. Without having the necessary license through the state, a contractor is not legally able to do business, and cannot be trusted to uphold the services they provide. The validity of a contractor’s license can also affect the warranty on the product installed and whether the product was installed to current building codes.
There are other considerations as well, such as building permits, local code inspections, etc. For more information on selecting the right roofing contractor for your next project, contact the team at Midwest Roofing, Siding & Windows, serving the home improvement needs of Maple Grove and the surrounding Twin Cities area.
