Warranties for your roof vary significantly. It is important that you have an understanding of the roofing materials you choose, the warranties that go along with those roofing materials, and the difference between prorated and non-prorated warranties. For reasons involving the advancement of technology pertaining to new shingle manufacturing, now shingle roofing can last up to 30 years, allowing the shingle producers to extend their warranties.
How Does a Prorated Warranty Work?
Over time, prorated warranties lessens the amount a manufacturer is required to pay towards replacement or repairs of your roof regarding defects in their product. For instance, if a defect is found in your roof after it is installed, the repair will be taken care of completely without a cost to you. However, after each year, 5% less of the cost is covered.
The upside to a prorated warranty is that many of the warranties now include benefits that provide 100% guarantees for the first 5 or 10 years. This warranty is contrary to non-prorated warranties that requires manufacturers to take full responsibility until the warranty has been entirely served.
Why is a Non-Prorated Warranty Different?
With the non-prorated warranty, the total protection remains continuous. It does not decrease the manufacturer’s responsibilities with time. Throughout the life of your roof, you can rest assured knowing you are covered for the entire warranty period.
Unlike the complicated prorated warranty, the non-prorated warranty does not allot, or distribute its coverage. Instead it fulfills the contract, and takes the fault throughout the warranty. But, both warranties have their own pros and cons, and depending on your own preference, you can decide which warranty you like best.
