How Much Does a New Shingle Roof Cost?
A shingle roof cost can vary – it will depend upon a number of variables, such as the size of your roof, the condition of your roof, the cost of labor, and the type of shingles you want. Roofing shingles come in a variety of materials–everything from asphalt to recycled blends–and the cost reflects the quality and longevity of the shingle. When estimating shingle replacement cost, a contractor will include factors such as gables, valleys, and vents, and he must also evaluate the added cost of important materials such as underlayment, ice-and-water shield, flashing, drip-edge, nails, etc. But it is the shingles themselves that will comprise the majority of the cost, and will be figured into the cost of the shingle times the area to be covered.
Shingles: What’s the Difference?
The difference in roofing shingles boils down to technology: yesterdays and todays. The most inexpensive roofing shingle is the common asphalt shingle. The simple asphalt shingle has been around since the early 1900s and is little more than a section of asphalt–sprayed onto a backing–with added ceramic granules. The backing is comprised of matted fiberglass or an organic material. These can be very thin, and very cheap–they may weather quickly. The thicker the material, however, the better longevity. The old adage, “You get what you pay for,” should be taken seriously when it comes to roofing shingles: the quality of the shingle and the quality of installation make a big difference in the quality of your roof.
Today’s modern shingles are far more advanced. They are constructed of similar materials but have been configured to provide maximum protection against the elements, fire, and time, offering you optimal insulation and long-lasting, gorgeous aesthetics. They may look the same, but are actually integral components of high-tech roofing systems. While common asphalt shingles are certainly still available, we don’t recommend them and pride ourselves in being certified to install superior roofing systems. A roof’s reliability reflects its true cost–the longer it lasts, the more money you save.
