Homeowners Beware If Your Roofer Does These 3 Things

In the roofing field, there are some things that can nearly always pinpoint a disreputable contractor. If your roofer’s guilty of any of the three offenses listed below, it’s best to keep looking, no matter how desperately you need your roof repaired or replaced.

1. Appears Following Intense Weather Events

This type of contractor is usually referred to as a “storm chaser.” They appear after a big storm has moved through an area and begin taking roof repair jobs, which they’ll either not complete, or complete as cheaply as possible. Generally, legitimate contractors have a local location, references and have been in business for a number of years. The best way to avoid “storm chasers” or other roofing scams is to do your homework and trust your gut. If they can’t provide references or something feels off about the deal, keep searching.

2. Requests that You Sign a “Contingency” Contract before Reading It

When you’re looking for a Twin Cities roofing contractor because you need immediate roof repairs, it can be easy to panic and sign whatever is put in front of you. Contingency contracts (contracts that allow for immediate repairs, but also include contingency arrangements for further repairs) are not uncommon in situations where immediate repairs are necessary, but a reputable roofer will explain the contract to you and ensure you understand what’s included. Take the time to read the contract thoroughly, ask questions and understand what it entails before putting pen to paper.

3. Fails to Provide References and Credentials

Reputable roofing contractors in the Twin Cities area should be able to prove they’re licensed and insured, and be able to provide references for recently-completed roofing jobs. They should be able and willing to secure all the required permits for your roofing job, unless there are local ordinances that require input from the homeowner. Failure to provide requested documentation or requesting that you secure your own permits should be massive red flags when dealing with any kind of contractor, roofing or otherwise.
