What to Do When You Need Emergency Roof Repairs

Your roof plays a vital role in protecting your home, which means roof damage can’t always wait. If you’re missing a big patch of shingles or water is entering your attic, you’re dealing with a roof emergency. Prompt action can minimize the damage and make your repair bills manageable. But what should you do when you need emergency roof repairs? We recommend following these steps.

Step 1: Catch the Water

To tackle the issue, start by grabbing a bucket or a large plastic tote. If you’re up for the task, head up to the attic and strategically position a bucket under the dripping water. Remember, if you have multiple leaks, you’ll need multiple buckets. While you’re up there, rid the area of any saturated insulation and other materials. This step is a good starting point, but keep in mind that a more thorough water cleanup will be necessary to prevent further damage.

Step 2: Apply a Tarp

Feel free to skip this step if you can’t see where the roof is damaged or are uncomfortable on a ladder. If you can see the damaged area and reach it safely, put a tarp over it. Hold the tarp down by placing a brick in each corner. This will help keep additional water from trickling in. Try to do this from a ladder; avoid climbing on the roof.

Step 3: Take Photos

Photos of the damage will be helpful if you need to file a homeowners’ insurance claim. You can also share them with your roofing company to give them a better idea of the damage they’ll be addressing. Photograph the damaged section of the roof, and also take some pictures of any water damage or leaks in the attic.

Step 4: Call Your Roofing Company

Once your buckets and tarps are secure and you’ve snapped a few photos, contact a local roofing company like Midwest Roofing, Siding & Windows. We’ll send a roofer to your home as soon as possible. They can assess the damage, give you a quote, and start the repair process ASAP. We’ll even work with your homeowners’ insurance company to help you file a claim.
