Winter Preparation Checklist for Minnesota Homeowners

winter preparation checklist and new siding ideas

Another winter is fast approaching – and preparing for winter means more than buying a pair of mittens. Autumn is the perfect time to prepare your home for winter, and we at Midwest Roofing, Siding & Windows are available to help you brace yourself for another Halloween blizzard like the one in ’91. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to that!

Here’s a list of things you’ll want to have done so that your home is ready for Old Man Winter before the first snow hits.

The Roof System:

[checklist icon=”fa-check-square-o” iconcolor=”” circle=”” circlecolor=”” size=”medium” class=”” id=””]
[li_item icon=””]Prevent leaks before they start. Have your roof professionally inspected to make sure deteriorated flashing and sealants are replaced.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]Check to make sure your attic has adequate insulation to keep your family warm, your heating bills low, and to prevent ice dams.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]Make sure that your attic has adequate amounts of balanced ventilation. This prevents both ice dams and snow slides from the roof, which can tear away gutters, soffits and fascia on their way down.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]If you have a metal or slate roof, install snow guards to prevent rooftop snowslides.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]Buy a roof rake to remove the snow from your roof to prevent roof avalanches and possible collapses. (Or call in a local roofing contractor to help keep your roof clean in the event of excessive snowfall)[/li_item]

Gutters:

[li_item icon=””]Make sure your gutters are clean and clear. Meltwater with no place to go can wreak havoc on your roof and foundation.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]Make sure that your downspouts empty at least three feet from the home and that the water flows away from the home to prevent problems with the foundation.[/li_item]

Siding:

[li_item icon=””]Have your wood siding repainted or re-stained to prevent leaks and preserve the wood.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]Consider low maintenance vinyl or HardiePlank siding for your home.[/li_item]

Windows:

[li_item icon=””]Make sure that your windows are airtight and are ready to repel those wintery gales.[/li_item]
[li_item icon=””]If you are in the market for replacement windows, have them installed now to help lower your winter heating bills.[/li_item]
[/checklist]
