Do You Know When to Replace Your Windows?

Do You Know When to Replace Your Windows?

As a homeowner in the Maple Grove area, you may be wondering whether or not you should replace your old windows. New windows give your home an updated look and save you money on your energy bills because they do a better job at keeping the cold out. While replacing your old windows offers benefits, is it worth the investment? Here are a few ways to tell:

The 3 most obvious signs that you need new windows:

#1: Broken or Cracked Glass:

An obvious warning signal. Some homeowners are very crafty, and seal cracked windows with duct tape or silicone…we advise against taking this route. Replace your window!

#2: Crumbling or rotting sills:

When we were young, we were used to the blackening, molding sills.  With increased technology and better installation standards, rotting or crumbling sills indicate damage to the support itself.

#3: Leaking windows:

After one good Minnesota rainstorm, homeowners with leaky windows take measures to correct the problem!

These obvious signs are what people notice the most when considering window replacement. Broken windows are a safety issues and rotting or crumbling window sills mean that there is damage to the wood supporting the windows. These are situations where new windows become a necessity from a safety standpoint.

Less obvious signs that window replacement is necessary:

Besides the reasons for window replacement listed above, there are other indicators that may not be so obvious. These are not safety hazards requiring immediate attention so they often get overlooked or just not considered as that important.

Less Obvious Reason #1: Difficult to open

Windows that are hard to open, or have trouble staying up, may have hardware inside the window mechanism is no longer working.  Propping a window open with a book or other object is a safety risk around small children. If the object comes loose, the window could fall and smash little fingers.

Less Obvious Reason #2: Condensation

Condensation: When condensation builds up between window panes it means that the seal inside is no good. Fogging or even ice crystals indicate that moisture and cold air is able to get inside.

Less Obvious Reason #3: High Energy Bills

Replacing your old, inefficient windows with new windows that are designed to block the cold will save you money in energy costs.  They become a component of your insulation system because you won’t be tempted to turn up the heat when the temperature drops. When considering cost, the energy savings and tax incentives you’ll get help to defray the cost.
